Choppy playback - Solved

Post by formula1 » Thu Nov 08, 2018 6:53 pm

I've been having some issues with the TDA with choppy, hesitating video playback during rides. It looks like it skips a few frames every few seconds. It's still usable, but gets annoying. I don't have a nice smooth video playback. I've tried deactivating antivirus processes & deactivating widgets. I've tried to bring my laptop closer to the trainer, tried bluetooth dongles and internal bluetooth, nothing seems to stop the choppy feel to the video. If I play the downloaded video outside of TDA, it plays nicely. If I use it in the app, it's choppy. I'm guessing it's using alot of resources that my laptop cant handle, or some issue is at play. Has anyone else had this issue & fixed it? thanks!

The first thing I would look at is your laptop specs: CPU, memory, video card (particularly CPU and video).

Which videos are you downloading - HD or SD? If SD works okay, then your laptop specs are likely the issue.

TDA is not a low resource program and as features have continued to be added, it seems to require more.

You can check resource utilization using the Performance Monitor built into the Task Manager of Windows 10. (Enter crtl-alt-del, select Task Manager and then the Performance tab). You can run the Performance Monitor on top of TDA (to to options and select Always on Top) and watch it while you are using a video. If CPU and GPU levels are in the 95%+ range, then you have a problem.

Thank you for your reply. I'm running the software on a laptop. Intel Core i3-5020u CPU, 2.20 GHZ with 8 GB installed Ram, x64 based processor. I'm wondering if its sufficient. Task Manager is showing only 10% CPU usage, 3% GPU & 60% RAM usage when running Tacx. I'm only using SD videos. I was sure my hardware would have been sufficient, but I guess not. I also made sure all drivers are up to date.

Not sure what to say. Although your CPU is not overpowering, your low CPU usage indicates no issue. When you click on the GPU in the left hand column of the performance tab, you should see a number of GPU graphs (3D, copy, video encode, and video decode). The critical one is video decode. What % does it show?

Your memory seems a bit high. You probably have shared memory, some of which is dedicated to the GPU. What GPU chip do you have? Can you allocate more memory to the GPU? If your video decode is high, allocating more to the GPU might help.

I'm not sure, but may have zeroed in on the issue, but not sure if its related to the trainer or software. I looked at my Strava feed & noticed my speed graph, it looks like a clean pattern of my speed dropping about 5 km/hr every 5 seconds & then comes back up for another 5 seconds. It's a fairly even pattern of up/down, like a zig/zag. I'm assuming that's why my video keeps feeling like it's dropping frames & feels choppy. I've looked at other rides I did in TDA & the same up/down pattern in speed is noticed. Other rides I've done on Zwift don't have this jagged pattern. Could it be a bluetooth issue? I'm using the laptops internal adapter. I tried to upload a screen capture of the image but the board wont allow it.

Normally the speed you see is calculated from the watts your producing & having looked at that data on your strava this looks fine, I think thats just a small export-related bug that's affecting a lot users data that's exported to Strava from the Tacx cloud.

The choppy playback your experiencing is probably more related to the ride your using which was filmed a bit fast from a car (Majorca Grand Tour Stage 1), its one of the older rides in the collection. Try something filmed from 'Bertha' our filming EBike these are filmed at a cyclists speed & your probably going to have at least 2x the frame rate. Any of the free demo rides. Anything with riders...You will probably like the City Trips try Bologna, Rome or Gent these are filmed slow...Training with George Bennet would be a good one also, he was pushing less then 200watts the whole ride even though its quite hilly...that was his recovery ride route.

Interesting, thank you for your guidance. I never thought of that. I'll download one these & give it a try. Do the film descriptions in TDA mention filmed with Bertha? I want to only download those if it's the case. I'll start with the ones you mentioned. Thanks again! Really appreciate your help.

No back when the app started & actually in our RLV Beta we have 4K versions of everything filmed by Bertha, I figured the 4K would act as a filter. But Tacx decided the 4K would be too costly right now to make available just at this time. So they are all a bit hidden. The best way is to browse the facebook pages like https://www.facebook.com/TacxRealLifeVideo/ Anything posted on there since the start of 2016 will have been filmed on Bertha.

Did you look at your video decode % in Windows Performance Monitor?

If the problem is what Phil suggests (a big mismatch in the frame rates due the source material shot at a much different speed than your riding), it should show up as a very high video decode %. If you video decode % is high regardless of the video you are using, then you are more likely to have a computer issue.

Thanks again! That's a great list to use. And thanks mcorn for your guidance also! I'll have a look at the performance monitor while riding one of the Bertha videos to see what the video decode % is at. I didn't notice anything alarming when I tested it this weekend. I'll take a closer look, maybe I missed something.

I tried the Dinant to Namur yesterday evening (a Bertha production) and the video was so much better. No choppy video at all to report. I kept an eye on the video decode % in Windows Performance Monitor & nothing out of the ordinary there. I guess the few videos I had tried were all pre-Bertha productions filmed at a higher speed then I'm able to pedal :D & thus resulting in choppy playback for me. I was afraid my trainer or pc hardware were the problem, it wasn't. I'll just stick to the Bertha produced films. A big thanks to mcorn and to Tacx Video Production for both your inputs & getting me back on track in enjoying these great rides! :D
