Bricked Firmware update (Tacx Vortex)

Post by TERMiNAL » Sun Feb 17, 2019 5:08 am

Tried to update my firmware for my new Vortex, it did not progress so I stopped the update.

Reloaded the program and it is showing I have the latest firmware... The light has now turned solid amber.

Tried unplugging for an hour, re-installing the app, restarting my phone, restarting bluetooth.

I am having no luck with this, I found an older version of the firmware but it's just staying at the "Entering Bootloader" screen and not progressing.

This is strictly a firmware issue, how is it possible for me to even fix this issue if the updates won't even work, even older updates?

Are you talking about the Tacx utility app?
Try the updater for PC:

I do not have an ANT+ stick but I will be getting one.

That thread also says you can open the older firmware files with Tacx utility app, I tried that but that procedure doesn't work.

Will the PC fix work %100? I am hoping I don't have to send this back for a firmware issue.

No, there is no such certainty. Updating the firmware through a computer affects only one of the two processors of the trainer. However, this measure was effective in all known cases.

Tacx sent me a file to use for the firmware fix, and the file does not work, still sticks at the "Entering bootloader" screen and does not progress.

So if file they company sends me and doesn't work, that tells me this company doesn't know what they're doing.

Please let Tacx Support know what is happening. They might have other suggestions. Your brake could also be permanently bricked.

Yes I may have to send this thing back, I don't know if I want another one I'd rather just get my money back and save for something else.

A friend of mine is coming over with an iPhone on Saturday, maybe it will work on iOS.

I have a Vortex Smart that I used for a few years and it was reasonably reliable. But firmware updates were always a nervous time.

They emailed me back and say try another phone/tablet and that is really the only solution.

Next I will try with a ANT+ stick and an iPhone, but I don't understand how that could make any difference using it on a different phone...

I think ANT may be more reliable than BT for firmware updates. I also have a recollection that I had an old, very slow Tacx T1991 USB 1.1 ANT stick that was not very useful for running software but it did work well for doing brake firmware updates. For some reason, it's slower speed seemed to make a more consistent connection with the brake. In addition, the ANT stick should be place as close as possible to the brake.

My version already shows the latest though, so I don't know how it will fix it with ANT+...

Carefully read the instructions. When starting the updater, the Internet should be disabled.

Thank you, I will be trying to fix the firmware with an iPhone on Saturday with the file that Tacx provided.

All the files I used with my LG G6 have given me no success.

If the iPhone does not work then next is the ANT+...if that doesn't work I will send it back for Warranty and hopefully they will send me another one.

So, you were using an ANT connection, not Bluetooth?

Yes I used blutooth to fix the firmware, but with an iPhone this time and it worked.
