Trainer Tires

Post by mcorn » Thu Jan 18, 2018 10:35 pm

Thought it might be useful to provide feedback on this subject. This week I replaced a Continental Hometrainer tire that I had for about 4 years. I do not put huge mileage on even though we ride our tandem on Tacx trainers multiple times per week for most of the year. The Continental performed well and the tread had not worn out. However, the tire body, which is a more plastic-like material (or a very hard rubber) had gotten brittle and was beginning to crack. As a result, it was rough and noisy and I could see that it might well crack all the way through and cause a blow-out.

So, I decided to try a red Vittoria Zaffiro Protrainer tire, which is considerably less expensive (my eBay price was half of what some sell the Contiental for). No problem mounting this folding tire. The Vittoria seems softer than the Continental. I once had a Tacx that was way too soft and shred a lot of rubber balls. That was many years ago, so I do not know what a current Tacx is like.
