Neo 2 Cadence random values? (With 0.0.18)

Post by fellrnr » Sat Jan 12, 2019 5:24 pm

The cadence data from my Neo 2 seems random. It will vary wildly, with intermittent changes, which suggests it's only occasionally detecting the rotation.

I've tried with Ant+ (Golden Cheetah, Garmin) and with Bluetooth (Tacx iOS App) and all show the same (bad) values.

Any suggestions? Is there something I should attach to the crank arm, such as a magnet?

0.0.18 - Is this the firmware number for Neo 2? You are the first who reported about it here on the forum.

The latest firmware I have is 0.0.18. It seems like the issue is with how the Neo detects the crank arms. I'm guessing that different crank arm material, crank arm length, and the geometry of the bike (which changes the crank location relative to the Neo) all influence things.

I saw one post where someone had taped a metal bar to the crank arm to make it longer.

In the group of owners of Neo on Facebook the same topic is touched:

Here I have no Cadence at all  This is the third time I have cadence problems with this expensive device.
So please build in a function to downgrade firmware as an other user already suggested.

"saw one post where someone had taped a metal bar to the crank arm to make it longer"
This is one thing I already have done.
It works but on a more then 1000€ device

And now again problems...

Suggestions like this are best emailed to support@tacx.com. While it may not be clear since Tacx hosts the forums, these are still user forums moderated by other users such as yourself and Tacx employees rarely visit!

I got a mail with the firmware package to downgrade. Now cadence is working again.

I have just set up a Neo 2 with a new/clean Windows 10 machine running the Desktop App. As many have found, there was no cadence output or pedal stroke analysis, despite firmware upgrade to 0.0.18. Saw the earlier comment about extending the pedal/crank metal work to cover the invisible sensor behind the plastic panel and this has solved the problem! Excellent outcome but a bit disappointing about the Neo hardware design. The bike I am using is a old steel tube road bike with Campag 9-speed 170 mm cranks, so the 'Q factor' is quite high. Clearly, Tacx had longer/closer cranks in mind when they designed the kit???

Is there any FW between version 0.0.15 and 0.0.18?
Do you have the beta FW 0.0.19, could you post it here, please?!?

So I found something, my cadence was working great on my 650b mtn bike but when I switched to my girls 650b hard tail the cadence wouldn’t work and would show zero almost always with an occasional reading. After playing around with the tacx utility app I found if you run you hand past where there is a bulge on the left side of the trainer (kinda by the power/bt LEDs) it would start counting cadence.
So with a few zip ties and an Allen wrench, I zip tied the Allen wrench to the inside of the left crank arm effectively making the crank arm longer. It works great now. The bikes longer chainstay and shorter crank arms were too short to reach the sensor properly. Might no be everyone’s issue but might be some.

I posted this in the zwift forum and wanted to share here. I see I'm late but oh well might still help someone

So once you have the zip file how do you then roll back the software?

I suspect this will effect those with smaller size MTB frames and shorter 165/170 mm length cranks. Ironic seeing as one of the main changes for the Neo 2 were to allow for bikes with long cage rear derailleurs.

170s is exactly what she has.
