TDA with Wahoo Kickr?

Post by Regenmacher » Sat Nov 03, 2018 3:20 pm

I once tried a free video of the TDA with the Wahoo Kickr to drive.
The brake is not regulated. With a slope, only the speed is reduced - the resistance remains the same.
Are Tacx trainers only supported for the TDA?

The Tacx Desktop application only works with Tacx smart trainers. In the future Tacx will support Bluetooth FTMS, which gives the possibility to connect other brand trainers.

Do you can already call a rough time? Months or years?

seeing as the FTMS protocol isn't even available on Tacx trainers yet, I would say its going to be awhile.

Completely missed the fact that Taxc has once again introduced a product that depends entirely on a proprietary communications protocol! So not only did Tacx develop under a platform that prevents owners of older ANT+ F-EC compatible Tacx trainers from joining in the fun, they have also prevented more than 60% of the global Smart Trainer owner base from also running TDA. What is that, a loss of a possible 250,000 additional subscribers world wide? Of course give the comments I have read about slowness in regards to current user loads, maybe that was for the best.

It partly depends on whether Tacx see itself primarily a hardware seller that provides software that facilitates use of the hardware or whether it is mostly a software seller that is open to any kind of user. I think it is more the former than the latter and pretty much always has been.

If I understood the last release notes for the Utility App update correctly, Tacx are on track for Bluetooth FTMS. If that standard spreads as fast as ANT FE-C, TDA could be good to go with any smart trainer next trainer season. I still agree that ditching ANT doesn‘t look like a smart decision, but they may have had valid reasons for it, or at least reasons that looked valid at the time.

Tacx opted to develop TDA under a platform that allowed distribution as a Windows Store app. Conversely, possibly due to cost constraints, ThisIsAnt has chosen not to develop a driver that is compatible with this platform, hence not ANT+ for TDA until a compatible driver is developed.

I‘m wondering about the reasons for that design decision. Probably cost, yes, AIM recommendation or capability, or an expectation of very fast spreading of BT FTMS, killing ANT along the way. Tacx will never share, so it‘s all speculation.

There is probably a marketing side and technical side to explain this. In terms of marketing, distributing programs through the Miicrosoft (or Apple store for the Mac version) is seen as a good way to get a product out. In terms of technical, the UWP platform is designed to work with the W10 app system rather than as a general Windows program, and have a high degree or technical and security benefits. Not really sure how true any of these really are.

I do not know the truth of it either as the platform they chose was not one thats easy to port to mac IOS Android etc like say Unity. I think they liked the idea of the app stores. Im guessing they started developing & then discovered after it was too late that Garmin had not made a Ant+ driver for windows apps but also the fact that all tacx trainers that they want to sell have BT it does not matter to them if the software is not massively profitable, what matters is Tacx sell trainers. Remember that mac does have an Ant+ driver but the Mac version of TDA is not working with it also. What will happen is eventually they will get the BT standard working, they were starting to test that & when that rolls out then 3rd party trainers with the same BT standard will work with TDA. I would expect there also to be a few different Ant+ to BT bridge solutions soon after also.

Not so much software.
