tyre pressure on trainer

Post by vinay » Tue Sep 17, 2013 9:52 pm

What tyre pressure do you recommend for the 26" Tacx trainer tyre? Usually I have my tyres at about 1.5 bar, but these are 2.2" to 2.4" wide (or wider on the bigger hitting bike). The Tacx tyre is incredibly narrow, so I bumped pressure up to well over 2.5 bar. Is that too much, to little or just right? Calibration index on my Bushido trainer is usually somewhere at 17 or 18 and I noticed in another thread (read only) that this index should be somewhere between 10 and 15. Does this mean I should raise my pressure or lower it? And by how much?

60 - 90 PSI ........ 4 - 6.2 BAR

Would advise opt for higher pressure, adjust knob/nut under engagement handle to lower/increase tension to get required calibration figure

Recommended pressure for tyres of 700x23 dimension is around 8 Kg/cm2 (roughly 8 bars or 113½ lbs/sq. in.)

A narrow MTB tire, like the Tacx trainer tire, may not work on an MTB rim that is designed for very wide tires (over 2"). Did you check the spec on the Tacx trainer tire to see if it is suitable for your wider MTB rims?

I answered with pressures above as looked up 26 inch turbo trainer tyres & recommended pressures where those above post..

Repeated here : 60 - 90 PSI ........ 4 - 6.2 BAR

These are not road 700c x 23 tyres which run higher pressures 110 to 120 psi 6 to 8 bar

I was raising a fitment issue rather than tire pressure. Putting together a tire and rim not meant for each other can cause a tire blow-off or other problems. In general, a rim designed for a 2.2"+ tire would not be suitable for a 1.25" tire.

No worries, the rim is pretty narrow actually. I increased pressure to somewhere around 5 bar and the tyre stays put.

Never thought over 2" was considered very wide. Anything below 2.1" is considered narrow, nowadays ;).
