What is virtual speed?

Post by Tacx Video Production » Tue Sep 11, 2007 5:37 pm

This is a mathematical formula that works out your real world speed from your mass, gravity, grade & power. This guarantees that your time with the Tacx i-magic on a stretch of real life video based road (for example Alp'dHuez from the AlpineClassic DVD), is fairly accurate for the effort you exert.

If we used roller speed then strong riders will be able to max out the break of the i-magic with the result of totally unrealistic times. Obviously there are other factors that are tough to replicate like Altitude (thin air & a lack of oxygen) weather conditions etc. But the maths is robust & the time should be in the ball park of what you will do in real life.

If you are lucky enough to have the Fortius then you will not encounter 'virtual speed' unless you hit really steep grades at a high wattage. Your gearing will be much closer to real (if your stuck on some never ending climb on 38x28 at 40rpm 280watts on the Fortius then you will need at least this gear in real life!)
