GPS Route Creation

Post by betski » Thu Jan 15, 2015 11:33 am

Had my i-Vortex for about a month now and absolutely love it 8)

I'm in the process of building some GPS routes (for TTS 4) based on the most impressive city skylines in the world which have 3D modelled buildings in Google Earth. Surprisingly, there's not that many cities that have this level of detail as i think now Google turn to dynamic modelling for some cities.

I want to know what is the best website for creating routes?? as so far, my routes created with Strava have been hit and miss, especially in cities with complex road systems.

I created a route based on the HongKong Marathon using the best GPS signal i could find from strava athletes activities but this produces alot of mini detours which detract from its usefulness. I also created a route manually in satellite view, but the overlay in standard view is totally offset, therefore, you don't ride any existing segments.

Also, is there a way to zoom in and out when riding with the 360 panoramic view? This would be useful to see the full height of these amazing 3D modelled buildings

I've ditched strava for creating routes as it was hopeless for complex areas and instead used

1.viewranger to create the route
2.gps visualizer to add elevation
3.gpx smoother to smooth

I'll upload some routes to bikenet this weekend under the prefix 3DCITY

ACAPULCO (dynamic 3d)
SHANGHAI (modeled)
HONGKONG (modeled)

Cheers and enjoy, especially Acapulco

Nice!

Another tool widely used (I use it too) is the 3D Route Builder - I personally recommend it!
