Raid Pyrenees I

Post by Edgarini » Fri Jan 31, 2014 5:39 am

Phil "700km from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic climbing over 27 mountains including the legendary Pailhères, Tourmalet, Bales & Aubisque- every meter in Blue sky & filmed in the highest quality available..... A slightly shorter version is available for IOS...This is endurance training with a difference..."

Huh....somewhat surprised there's not more buzz about Raid 1 being available at the shop. It really is a beautiful ride, and the start of an amazing series that shouldn't be missed. The Raid is a great complement to last years RdGA. 1 has about the same volume of riding as the RdGAs did, and 2 exceeds them. It's a lot greener and cozy w/ a more intimate feel: Rather than spending most of your time on above-treeline-alpine climb/decents, you weave through cool little villages often on backwater roads, occasionally topping out above treeline (2.5x on 1 and 5x on 2) to rewarding vistas, which just get more impressive as the route continues. This ride should not be missed. It's an apples vs. oranges call...but personally I enjoyed it even more than the RdGAs so far.

1 starts out with a beautiful grassy climb near the sea (La Madeloc), then settles into a relatively flat section across the marshlands mostly on back roads through small villages, finally crossing a small bridge, from where the real fun begins at the base of the Jau. This approach adds a lot to the overall "feel" of the ride IMO. The Jau, Pailheres, Chioula then await, ending w/a great backroad traverse and descent to the finish in Tarascon sur Ariege.

I ordered it as soon as it was available and received a message that it has been sent. Since I"m across the ocean it usually takes a couple of weeks and I can't wait!

I already have big plans for riding part 1 and hope part 2 is available soon.

Just ordered - Tourmalet download link and code arrived today, too - look forward to part 2. :D Not sure whether I could cope with a Raid group ride as I did with RDGA, but surely I would try!

That's the spirit!

Our third child was born on New Year's Eve, so I might struggle to find the time/energy, but I'm certainly willing to give it a go. Haven't ordered the disc yet, mind you, but if I order it tomorrow it might be with me reasonably soon.

Anybody else? Håkan? Doug? Phil? Mal? Gordo? Any other veterans of the 2013 RdGA extraordinaire?

Can anyone set up a Google map like we had last winter? Should we start a new thread to drum up some participation?

Congrats Jim...that's one birthday that's going to be easy to remember!

Let's give it a week for those interested to get their disks. I'll look into setting up a group Google map ala what Martin set up for the RdGA.

I did try to say to Tacx about the great experience we all had last winter with the RDGA & how that map made it into something rather special, I even sent a direct link to the thread to the head of Tacx..I don't think they get it, they still see cycling as a game & perhaps forget that there are many different aspects to our wonderful sport. With this one being the concept of a group of friends cycling to a destination far away....Its a real virtual "Cycle Tour" The added factor of the being able to see the location of everyone else on the map creating the motivation.

One day someone will take this idea & run with it

In fact I hate climbing but due to the group pressure I ordered the two disks
BUT part 2 was already sold out (or was it still not available)...but coming soon ( or  ?)
I thought of that while riding my bike.

Part 2 was finished at about the same time, I had to render part of it a bit smaller at the last minute as a 50GB BluRay actually means 43GB ...we found out the hard way. Luck I had already cut the Tourmalet from it as it would have ended up being DVD quality. Part one was just the right size by luck really! Anyway I dont think there will be much of a delay before part 2 is also available.

Martin, your the expert on this....could you possibly set up a map if I send you the gpx files (or would another format work better)?
Ed

PS....it's gonna take quite a bit of "group pressure" to get you through 2 then.....but oh the rewards!
