I have a Genius and recently changed my crank to a compact for my road bike and experiencing cadence drop could this change be the problem.

Not directly.
Are you sure you got the cadence magnet correctly placed on the crank arm with the change?.
Similarly when doing it are you sure the detector didn't get moved?.

Not sure what make of cadence sensor you are using, but I would be sure it has a fresh battery.
